Abstract: Several studies about the freshwater fish communities of Brazilian river basins have been developed during the last few decades and their results have been published in scientific journals, thesis and internal reports. In this revision we surnmarise part of the information related to species richness, trophic structure and habitat use reported for streams, rivers and reservoirs. We try to identify patterns between equivalent habitats of the main river basins. Sampling explains most of the variability found between communities, but differences between streams are significantly related to latitude and differences between reservoirs are dependent on their size. The trophic structure of the communities also show common trends. Streams seem to have relatively high diversity and abundance of omnivores and insectivores, while floodplains are dominated by detritivores, and reservoirs and rivers channels have high abundances of piscivores. This structure is probably related to the productivity of the biotopes. The strategy of resource exploitation also show trends between equivalent habitats.

Abstract: In this chapter, we broadly described the floodplain, including geomorphological features, species richness, abiotic and functional aspects, regional and local impacts and finally, we concluded making suggestions to direct research and management of the area to guide its conservation. The last undammed stretch of the Paraná River and its remaining floodplain has two distinct surfaces: the Low Terrace and the Fluvial Plain. These create great habitat diversity in flooded areas where are included active and semi-active channels, lagoons, and elongated lowlands associated with paleochannels, and lowlands associated with the flood basin. Surveys conducted in the Upper Paraná River floodplain system since 1986, registered 2920 taxa of terrestrial and aquatic organisms. In the region, the flood pulse is still the main forcing function that regulates functioning and communities composition and structure. Main sources of impact on the area are the current process of human occupation that has to be disrupted and dams operation upstream from the area that has to be rationalized. Important steps to disrupt human occupation were the creation of three conservation units in the region and recently its incorporation into the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve. Also, it is needed intense enforcement and, mainly, a wide program of environmental education (already started) to alert people, locals and visitors, about the importance of the area, its preservation and the main regional and local sources of impacts. Alterations in the hydrological regime by operation of upstream dams (27 major dams) seem to be the most important source of impacts on the river-floodplain system, especially after the closure of the Porto Primavera Dam. Even so, the area still plays fundamental role in the maintenance of the regional biodiversity of terrestrial and aquatic organisms. It is suggested to use dam operation as a tool to benefit local and regional biodiversity, simulating floods that are beneficial for most of the organisms. However, all these actions should be discussed in a basin Committee. This Committee, with ample representation of stakeholders, should guide and prioritize actions to be taken in the floodplain.

Abstract: This chapter is concerned with the limnological and ichthyological aspects of the high River Paraná, delimited by the confluence of Rivers Paranaíba and Grande up to the former Sete Quedas Waterfalls (619 km). The intensive use of the water bodies of this basin and the construction of many dams have had a great influence on the limnological characteristics which affect the structure and the functioning of the biological community that inhabit them. Among the limnological parameters, phosphorus deserves special attention since it is the main nutrient associated with the eutrofication process and it can be an indicator of anthropogenic interference. A model concerning the main routes of phosphorus in different water bodies of the basin is proposed. The flood pulses are the main forcing function that regulates the exchange between the river and its floodplain. Two hundred and twenty-one fish species were registered in the different environments of the basin. More than 20 species from other basins were introduced and, at least 17 other species were dispersed after the barrier of the former Sete Quedas Waterfalls had been submerged when the Itaipu Reservoir was formed. Piscivorous and detritivorous species are dominant in the fish assemblages of the basin alternating in importance according to the environment. The first group predominates in rivers, while the second one in lagoons and secondary channels. Information on some reproductive tatics of 71 species of teleosts is available. There is a prevalence of species with external fecundation, partial spawning, marked reproductive seasonality and shor reproductive period. The beginning of gonadal development is related to water temperature and day-length increase; spawning begins with the flood which widens the environmental areas, while the end of this period is determined by the flood peak. Information about growth parameters is restrict to only about 10% of the species: loricarids and pimelodids present low growth rates, while characids and curimatids present higher growth rates. The inverse relation between growth rate values and those of first maturity length reflects the relationship between somatic and reproductive investment. The pressure of anthropic activities, especially those related to damming and pollution, has deeply changed fishery yield and its specific composition. The integrity maintenance of the remaining free stretches of the high River Paraná is essential to the permanence of the access routes to the spawning sites, and to the floodplain, vital to the juvenile phases of development. This is still possible through the definitive suspension of the construction of Ilha Grande Reservoir and of a suitable flow manipulation of the reservoirs upstream.

Abstract: The status of the commercial fisheries in the Brazilian part of the Paraná river basin, including the Pantanal is reviewed. The Paraná is nearly completely regulated by a cascade of dams built for hydroelectric power generation. Only 230km of main river remain as running waters. The basin has the highest population density in the country, and a high concentration of industry and intensive agriculture. Despite the variable quality of data, fish stocks have been severely degraded by flow regulation and pollution. Large migratory fishes are rare or even absent in some stretches of the main river and in some important tributaries. Fisheries are now dominated by small, low commercial value specimens preadapted to lacustrine habitats. Species introductions are also a major concern.
