| pt_BR |
| dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT: Considering the conflict between political and religious powers in northern Italy in the 11th and 12th centuries, represented by the Papacy and the German Empire with the dispute over the investiture of bishops and clergy of the Roman Church, we have the figure of Matilda of Canossa, Countess of Tuscany and Duchess of Lorraine, who concentrated in herself a mediating power and political influence capable of influencing relations between the two powers. Our objective in this study is to investigate the political influence and mediating power of Matilda of Canossa in the investiture conflict between the Papacy and the Holy Roman Empire between 1046 and 1115. As our object of study, we chose political influence and mediating power capable of articulating and inferring political, religious, and economic relations between temporal and spiritual powers, in addition to corroborating the support and permanence of a woman's government. Thus, we question how a society in which temporal and spiritual power relations were exclusively dominated by men constructed the figure of a woman capable of influencing political and religious relations between the Church and the Empire; what was the source of Matilda of Canossa's m. To answer this question and achieve our goal, we listed as research sources the works Vita della grande Contessa Matildi di Canossa, by Donizone de Canossa (1888); Documenti e lettere di Matilde di Canossa, by Paolo Golinelli (2015); and Matilde di Canossa: L'arte della politica e la cura del territorio, by Alessandro Carri (2012). As this is a bibliographic and documentary study, we base our work on the perspective of social history and the concept of the long term, as we believe that understanding certain political and social issues from the past enables us to analyze the role of men and/or women in different historical periods, including the present day. Analysis of the sources shows that, as a member of the nobility, the knowledge acquired by Matilda of Canossa since childhood, through the influence of her parents and tutors, especially Bishop Hildebrand (Pope Gregory VII), developed in her moral and intellectual abilities that contributed to her political and religious articulation. The social relationships built between members of the Church, especially the figure of the Pope, resulted in a fruitful friendship, fundamental to maintaining both in power, constantly threatened by the political and religious interests of the Emperor. Therefore, the reciprocity between Matilda and the Church, expressed in the friendship between the countess and Pope Gregory VII, validated the mediating power and political-religious influence of a female ruler in the Middle Ages, consecrating her as a defender of the Roman Church and sparking the curiosity of researchers to discover more about her legacy over time. | pt_BR |
