ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the transformations of the printed book in Brazil between 2001 and 2024, examining the relationships between editorial design, the book market, and reading practices during a period marked by the expansion of digital technologies and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grounded in the field of History, with emphasis on the intersections between culture, graphic design, and the publishing market, the research departs from the observation that the printed book, widely announced as an object in decline in the face of digitalization, not only resisted the advancement of digital formats but also demonstrated a capacity for recovery and reinvention throughout the investigated period, as documented by institutional sources of national and international scope. The investigation adopts, as its methodological approach, the exclusive use of verified documentary sources rather than the production of primary data through questionnaires or focus groups. This choice is grounded in the quality, consistency, and breadth of existing documentary series, most notably the six editions of Retratos da Leitura no Brasil, produced by Instituto Pró-Livro between 2001 and 2024, and the annual reports on Production and Sales of the Brazilian Publishing Sector, prepared by the Sindicato Nacional dos Editores de Livros in partnership with Nielsen BookScan. These sources, treated as historical documents and analyzed in light of contributions from the historiography of culture and design theory, form the documentary basis upon which the research constructs its argument. This foundation is further complemented by research from the Publishers Association, the Association of American Publishers, and the International Publishers Association, which situate the Brazilian case in comparative perspective. Throughout the research, Brazil is treated as a concrete historical ground - a territory with specific structural conditions that shape every cultural and market phenomenon. The deep inequalities that characterize the Brazilian publishing field, both in terms of access to books and in the regional distribution of cultural infrastructure, are considered central analytical variables rather than implicit background. The COVID-19 pandemic is examined, in light of Reinhart Koselleck's notion of historical temporalities, as a catalyzing event that rendered visible and measurable trends that had already been emerging before 2020 - among them the appreciation of the book as a tactile and cognitive experience distinct from screen reading, and the growth of reader communities organized on digital platforms such as BookTok and BookTube. The research concludes that the transformations of the printed book in Brazil during the investigated period cannot be explained by any single factor - neither screen fatigue, nor the pandemic, nor publishing market strategies - but result from a set of historical, cultural, economic, and design-related determinations that this thesis proposes to describe and interpret in an articulated and original manner. |
