Neste sentido, a figura do cavaleiro inglês é, portanto, fundamental.
T: In the 14th century, the production of illuminated manuscripts was directly related to the nobility. Especially in England, this group began to act as patrons, by organizing and orienting teams of workers to make those books for their use. It happened at the same time as the devotion beyond monasteries was being made popular, in the form of a personal devotion of noble men and women that needed, for it, to have specific books: the psalters and the books of hours. Those books enabled a personal religious experience through an organized reading or the psalms and other prayers following the day's canonical hours. It is in this context that our main manuscript to be analyzed was made. The Luttrell Psalter is an illuminated manuscript made under the patronagem of an English knight through the decades of 1330 and 1340 in Lincolnshire, England. This knight is Sir Geoffrey Luttrell (1276-1345), who has a strong relation with his illuminated manuscript. It is perceived in straight ways, as in the two images depicting him alongside his family, while expressing his social standing as a knight and a lord. But it is also done indirectly, through presenting the daily life in his lands, and the practices common in his social circles, as the aristocratic leisure activities of medieval knighthood. In this thesis, our main problem questions the many forms of expression. of such identities that are related to the Luttrell patron in the manuscript's images. We also follow the idea that such identities can only be perceived and studied through questioning images of their opposites: the difference. The others, Geoffrey's, the English, and Christendom's enemies, are present throughout the Luttrell Psalter's images. Our main hypothesis considers them as part of a general discourse, present in all elements of the manuscript, to tell, defend, and affirm conceptions on Geoffrey and his circles, as seen by themselves. In this manner, the knight's image is paramount. We start by presenting him, his involvement in battles and in English politics during the beginning of the 14th century. After that, we present our main source to the reader, explaining the Luttrell Psalter's materiality and the history of its making, during and after his patron's life. We also show the specificities of its images and its internal organization. Then, we theorize on the relation between images, art historiography, and historical research on identity and the ideas of self and its expression, culminating in its relevance to the study of difference. In the last two chapters, we use the serial method to study the images of the others and the various ways to tell the difference in the Luttrell Psalter and in other English illuminated manuscripts from the 13th and 14th centuries. We claim the possibility of using the concept of race and, specifically to speak of racialization, in the context of the Luttrell Psalter. It is done through physical characteristic marking the others' bodies, but also through their clothes and the objects that they are using in the images, as noted in the fourth chapter. Then, in the fifth chapter we added that racialization is also moral and consists in a fluid essentialization of visual and moral traits. In this matter, we centered our analysis on the violence as the main mark of otherness in the Luttrell Psalter. We concluded that all those matters relate to the defense and expression of a cluster of fragile English identities by the manuscript that count entirely on differences to exist. We believe that it is relevant to advert that, even though such differences don't materially exist, as they are fictitious and elaborated according to diverse interests, their consequences are real and can be used to justify violence and persecution, as in the context of 13th and 14th century England.pt_BR
