Abstract: Inserted within the field of Linguistic Studies and the area of Language Teaching and Learning, this research investigates the functioning of direct discourse (DD) in children's writing, drawing on Authier-Revuz's reflections (1990, 1998, 2004) on enunciative heterogeneities. The general objective of the study is to understand the linguistic and enunciative-discursive processes involved in the emergence of DD in narrative texts produced by children. To this end, three specific objectives were established: (I) to verify whether and how DD emerges in children's narrative utterances; (II) to identify qualitative and quantitative differences in the emergence of DD according to years of schooling; and (III) to analyze, from an enunciative-discursive perspective, the functioning of DD in children's writing. The research is grounded in an interpretivist epistemological framework and adopts an abductive methodological procedure, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The corpus consists of three hundred utterances produced by children aged six to twelve years old, enrolled from the 1st to the 5th year of Elementary School I in three municipal public schools located in the cities of Apucarana, Maringá, and Paranavaí, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. The texts were generated through a rewriting activity based on the fable The Hare and the Tortoise, previously presented in audiovisual format, in accordance with the school curriculum and with the aim of promoting authentic situations of written production. The theoretical framework articulates the contributions of Corrêa (2004), regarding the heterogeneous conception of language and writing; the reflections of Authier-Revuz (1990, 1998, 2004) on enunciative heterogeneities and the constitution of the subject through alterity; Risso's (1978) approach to the linguistic organization of direct discourse and its mechanisms of introduction and delimitation in narrative texts; and the studies of Capristano (2007) and Abaurre, Fiad, and Mayrink-Sabinson (1997), which conceive children's writing as a space for linguistic, enunciative, and discursive manifestations. These theoretical contributions make it possible to understand children's writing as a linguistic, enunciative, and discursive process in which singular forms of knowledge and ways of circulating through language become manifest. The results indicate that, out of the 300 collected texts, 265 were considered analyzable, among which 182 presented the emergence of direct discourse and 83 did not present this resource. A progressive increase in the occurrence of DD throughout the years of schooling was observed, rising from approximately 24% of the utterances in the 1st year to 95% in the 5th year. The qualitative analysis further suggested that the representation of the other's voice may occur through different combinations of graphic and syntactic markers, ranging from the absence of formal DD markers to the simultaneous use of multiple markers. These findings make it possible to understand that direct discourse in children's writing is organized through different degrees of explicitation of shown heterogeneity, suggesting variations in the visibility of the other's voice within narrative texts throughout the schooling process.
