A presente
resposta retornos negativos. ABSTRACT: During the last decades, studies are pointing an increase in the fixed costs of companies and the strengthening of Operating Leverage (OL) as a way of managing the cash reserves of companies (Li, 2004; Dantas, Medeiros & Lustosa, 2006; Kahl et al., 2019). This research had the aim of analyzing how operating leverage affects the relation between the investment and the future performance of companies listed on B3. Data of companies were collected from the data base Economática®. The data survey contemplates a time interval of eighteen (18) years between 2001 and 2018. The resulting sample had 271 companies with 4,878 observations excluding the financial sector. For data analysis was chose the model of regression with data in panel for the statistic tests. Results allowed identifying that companies with greater investment and greater proportion of costs and fixed expenses in their cost structure (CE) had greater future ROA. This result refuted hypothesis H1a (the greater the investment is, the smaller future ROA will be) and H1b (the greater the proportion of costs and variable expenses are, the greater future ROA will be), contrary to what literature identified. Regarding control variables, FA (Financial Leverage) had negative sign and FCL (free cash flow) positive sign in all models, which was expected confirming the trend for the practice of super-investment in companies of the sample. The implication of those findings is that companies from the sample having a tendency for super-investments behave in a financially conservative way in order to have future positive results, indicating a behavior of value maximization instead of being a problem of the branch. On the other hand, the hypothesis of moderating EC variable was accepted only for the cases of companies classified in this research as having super-investments. In this sense, it was verified that in companies with super-investments the relation between them and the future performance became inversely proportional when EC moderated the relation. This way companies with a propensity for super-investments have a greater probability of having future negative results when they have a greater proportion of costs and fixed expenses in their cost structure, in other words, greater AO. The implication of it is that, in this scenario, it is possible to have indications regarding the presence of problems in the branch, in other words, when more than the necessary is invested (empire building) bringing in return negative results. |
