A inquisição na Bahia (1591-1592) : um estudo da dinâmica dos comportamentos e costumes cristãos novos

Abstract

RESUMO: Este trabalho tem como propósito analisar os comportamentos descritos pelos cristãos novos a partir dos depoimentos confessionais presentes na obra Confissões da Bahia (1591-1591), fruto da primeira visitação do Santo Ofício da Inquisição à América portuguesa. Sob a jurisdição do Tribunal inquisitorial de Lisboa, as investigações lideradas pelo Licenciado Heitor Furtado de Mendonça objetivavam a identificação de práticas e de convicções avessas à doutrina cristã católica, especialmente comportamentos judaizantes, sintomas da adoção da proibida fé judaica. Nossa intenção foi validar a hipótese de que as ações narradas pelos cristãos novos, embora manifestem uma natureza judaica, não representam a continuidade do judaísmo consciente entre todos os sujeitos que compartilham a ascendência judaica. Portanto, considerou-se necessário realizar um exame completo dos depoimentos confidenciados ao inquisidor, fato que nos possibilitou visualizar a configuração social característica do viver em colônia e, por conseguinte, os desdobramentos da influência do trópico sobre a personalidade de nossos personagens. O resultado da pesquisa busca contribuir com o estudo da identidade cristã nova no contexto colonial, demonstrando que a distância no tempo e no espaço à época em que os judeus eram livres para praticar sua crença publicamente, somados ao estabelecimento da Inquisição portuguesa, que deu início a uma massiva perseguição aos cristãos novos, produziu significativas mudanças no seu modo de vive e pensar

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this work is to analyze the behaviors described by the new Christians from the confessional testimonies present in the work Confessões da Bahia (1591-1591), the result of the first visitation of the Holy Office of the Inquisition to Portuguese America. Under the authority of the Lisbon Inquisitorial Court, the investigations led by the licentiate Heitor Furtado de Mendonça aimed at identifying practices and convictions contrary to Catholic Christian doctrine, especially Judaizing behaviors, indicatives of the adoption of the forbidden Jewish faith. We intended to validate the hypothesis that the actions narrated by the new Christians, although they manifest a Jewish nature, do not represent the continuity of conscious Judaism among all the people who share Jewish ancestry. Therefore, it was considered necessary to carry out a complete examination of the testimonies confided to the inquisitor, a fact which allowed us to visualize the social configuration characteristic of life in a colony and, the consequences of the influence of the tropics on the personality of those people. The outcome of the research seeks to contribute to the study of the new Christian identity in the colonial context, demonstrating that the distance in time and space from the time when Jews were free to practice their belief openly, added to imposing of the Portuguese Inquisition, which started a massive persecution of new Christians, induced significant changes in their way of living and thinking
