Cultura, ética e identidade : reflexões pós-abissais na tradução de The Buddha in the attic para o português brasileiro

Abstract

Esta tese tem como objetivo principal analisar as escolhas tradutórias de Lilian Jenkino para o português brasileiro do romance The Buddha in the Attic (2011), de Julie Otsuka. Para tanto, me apoio em estudiosos da tradução como Derrida (2002), Fish (1992), Venuti (2019), Tymoczko (2010), Hermans (1996) e Esteves (2009, 2014). Além dos aspectos próprios da tradução, também foram discutidos conceitos como diáspora (BRAH, 1996 e HALL, 2003, 2006), orientalismo (SAID, 1985, 1990), racismo epistêmico (GROSFOGUEL, 2007), colonialidade do pensamento (QUIJANO, 1999) e poder-saber (FOUCAULT, 1995, 2006), revolvendo sempre em torno de questões culturais, éticas e identitárias. Esta pesquisa é autoetnográfica (ADAMS; JONES; ELLIS, 2015), por permitir a conexão entre o pessoal e o cultural na análise, observando os fenômenos analisados sem descartar as experiências e identidades do pesquisador. Uma vez que a narração coletiva da obra de Otsuka é feita a partir do ponto de vista de noivas de fotografia (picture brides), o estudo apresenta a trajetória histórica e (trans)cultural das mulheres imigrantes japonesas nos Estados Unidos da América. São levantadas discussões sobre o processo transcultural do sujeito diaspórico nipo-americano, traçando um paralelo com as experiências nipo-brasileiras. Objetiva-se analisar as questões transculturais e éticas na obra traduzida, O Buda no Sótão, buscando um rompimento com uma visão de um Japão exótico e outremizado, partindo, portanto, de uma visão pós-abissal (SANTOS, 2007). Como resultado da pesquisa, conclui-se que elementos extra-textuais, sonoros e terminológicos se mostram relevantes para entender relações entre língua, sons, imagens, sentido e cultura na tradução. A análise da obra demonstra que as escolhas tradutórias de Jenkino são solo fértil para observar a forma como aspectos (trans)culturais e de (co)autoria tradutória produzem sentidos e refletem representações que movem os fios do tecido identitário na convergência Japão - Estados Unidos - Brasil.

This doctoral thesis has the main goal of analyzing Lilian Jenkino's translation choices in the Portuguese translation of the novel The Buddha in the Attic (2011), by Julie Otsuka. To that end, I resort to translation scholars such as Derrida (2002), Fish (1992), Venuti (2019), Tymoczko (2010), Hermans (1996) and Esteves (2009, 2014). Besides the specific features of translation, other concepts were discussed, such as diaspora (BRAH, 1996 and HALL, 2003, 2006), orientalism, (SAID, 1985, 1990), epistemic racism (GROSFOGUEL, 2007), coloniality of knowledge (QUIJANO, 1999) and power knowledge (FOUCAULT, 1995, 2006), always allowing for cultural, identitarian and ethical matters. This is an autoethnographic research (ADAMS; JONES; ELLIS, 2015), for this methodology enables the connection between the personal and the cultural in the analysis, fostering the observation of the analyzed phenomena without discarding the researcher's experiences and identity. Since the collective narration of Otsuka's novel is made through the eyes of picture brides, this study retraces the historical and (trans)cultural background of Japanese immigrant women in the United States of America. Discussions revolving around the transcultural processes of Japanese American diaspora are raised, drawing a parallel with Japanese Brazilian experiences. I aim at analyzing transcultural and ethical matters present in the translated novel, O Buda no Sótão. I do so with the intent of severing ties with the understanding of Japan as othered and exoticized, permitting a discussion that allows us to see it from a post-abyssal point of view (SANTOS, 2007). As a result of this enterprise, it is possible to conclude that extra-textual, aural and terminological elements prove to be relevant in the understanding of connections established among language, sounds, image, meaning and culture in translation. The book analysis shows that Jenkino's translation choices are fertile ground for the observation of how (trans)cultural and (co)authorship aspects in translation produce meaning and reflect representations that move the strings of the identity tissue when Japan, Brazil and the United States converge.
